Recreation Grounds

Lake Grace Recreation Grounds

The Lake Grace Recreation Grounds hosts two grassed ovals (one west mainly used for hockey, one east mainly used for football), four synthetic grass tennis courts and two Laykold acrylic surface basketball/netball courts. The east oval also has a cricket pitch in the middle. To the south past the basketball/netball courts there are a pair of cricket cages. Irrigation of the ovals is by captured stormwater, or reused wastewater.

These areas surround the Lake Grace Sports Pavilion which contains four sets of bathrooms and four sets of change rooms, plus a universal access toilet/baby change room. Just outside the entrance to the main pavilion is a small playground for children encased within a sand pit. To the north are a set of old change rooms and toilets, which can be used as additional capacity for away teams, allowing for larger scale sporting events such as the Great Southern Colts Carnival.

Both ovals, the basketball/netball courts and the tennis courts are serviced by lights that operate off both a programmable timer, or by override key which allows the lights to be switched on outside of scheduled events.  Each sporting club has access to an override key to allow the lights to be turned on outside of the programmed schedule. Changes to the light timer schedule requires a call or email to our office from a sporting group representative. We will also need to be informed when they will no longer be needed, lest they turn on during the night for no one.

Access to the sporting precinct can be from Bishop Street past the ticket booth, or from the main road Stubbs Street (or Dumbleyung-Lake Grace Road) from the Sportsmans Club, passing through the picket fence vehicle entry. The area in front of the sports pavilion and around the tennis courts has been recently bituminized and serves as parking spaces.

Newdegate Recreation Grounds

The Newdegate Recreation Grounds features a football oval and a hockey oval and various amenities and facilities dotted around the area. The football oval has an electronic scoreboard and is adjacent to the Indoor Recreation Centre. The hockey oval is further away but has a 2-cubicle unisex toilet block and a brand new hockey shed complete with multi-level retaining wall for seating. Both ovals have light towers allowing for training during the evenings. On the road to the recreation centre is the tennis grounds on the right, with its own pavilion and six artificial grass tennis courts.

Irrigation for the football oval and the hockey ovals are through captured stormwater.

Between the two ovals sits an undercover jumping pillow, a fenced playground and an adult gym.

The Indoor Recreation Centre has four sets of change rooms and toilets split between male and female, and an indoor arena with parquetry flooring and enough space for two netball courts.

Access to the Newdegate Sporting Precinct is from the Mitchell Street, before the Newdegate School/Swimming Pool if coming from the west, or past it coming from the northeast (main intersection in town). Parking is available in front of the Indoor Recreation Centre for small events, and for larger events there is a large gravel parking lot before the hockey oval.

Lake King Sports Oval

Lake King has a single football oval with an attached sports pavilion, and two acrylic surface basketball/netball courts. Nearby are a recently refurbished playground, a jumping pillow, an adult gym and a spider climber. There are no public restrooms nearby, as both the sports pavilion and the hall are normally locked. The closest public toilets are on the main road across from the Lake King Roadhouse, a 200m walk away. The sports pavilion has two sets of change rooms to facilitate inter-regional games, with toilets separated from the change rooms for men and women, accessed from the outside and rear of the building. Out the front facing the oval is a large patio area.

A cricket pitch is present near the centre of the oval, and football goal posts are permanently erected on both sides of the oval.

There is field lighting for the oval only. The oval is irrigated through stormwater captured by a large dam towards the east (past the Lake King School) and can be remotely turned on and off by the Shire.

Access to the Lake King sports oval and pavilion is through a common bitumen accessway with the Lake King School and Library from the main road Newdegate-Ravensthorpe Road. There is a small bituminized parking area in front of the Lake King Hall, and more parking space by turning to the right to the area behind the courts.

Varley Recreation Grounds

Varley's sporting precinct is set a ways away from Varley townsite, one kilometres east on Carstairs Road. The entrance to the sporting precinct is clearly marked with large brickwork entry statements. Down the gravel driveway the road splits right for the Varley Golf Club and left for the recreation grounds.

The Varley recreation grounds contains a football oval, six grassed tennis courts and a bowling green, all surrounding the sports pavilion. Nearby is also an undercover playground for kids. There are light towers for the surrounding sports precinct and external areas to allow for nighttime playing.

The sports pavilion is kept locked when not in use, so there are no freely usable toilets in the vicinity. The closest public toilet is all the way back in Varley at the Chicken Ranch. However inside the sports pavilion there are two change rooms for males and females and a unisex, ambulant restroom.

There is ample parking on gravel just at the end of the driveway, right next to the facilities.

Pingaring Sports Oval

The Pingaring Sports Oval lies just within the Shire of Lake Grace's borders, with the town of Pingaring being part of the Shire of Kulin and just up the road. Clearly visible and accessed from the Pingaring-Varley Road east of the intersection with North Lake Grace-Karlgarin Road, this facility is maintained sparingly due to its low usage and limited facilities.

Present on these grounds is a football oval with a cricket pitch in the middle, 5 synthetic grass tennis courts, a disused ablution block and a small tennis pavilion. There is no lighting for the football oval but there are for the two southern tennis courts only.

Neighbouring the sports oval and pavilion is the old Pingaring school, currently used as storage and a community centre. These school facilities are considered a separate property not connected to the sporting facilities.
